Beth Hollick, Operation Hope, April 23, 2013

Our speaker today was Beth Hollick from Operation Hope.
Operation Hope started in 2003 as an emergency winter shelter and was only able to provide hotel vouchers for homeless families with children. They soon expanded and were at a rented warehouse for nine years where they provided shelter again for homeless families. Last year they were able to purchase and old medical clinic and have a permanent home.
They have expanded their services to include case management and job training. We will be feeding the families next Monday night (May 6) at 5:45pm.

Steve Vandenberg, Meteorology early warning, April 16, 2013

We had a very interesting program today featured Steve Vandenberg of SDG&E. Steve is a staff meteorologist and shared some great insights into the role that the meteorology staff plays in the early warning and decision-making processes at SDG&E.
In recent years, SDG&E has expanded their weather monitoring system from just a handful of
stations to 144 currently. These stations play a critical role in determining both the true weather picture, and more importantly, the wind conditions 24/7 at 10-minute reporting intervals. Their system is far more extensive and accurate than that of the National Weather Service (whom Steve used to work for as their wind and Red Flag Warning expert). The ability to more accurately forecast and monitor wind conditions plays a critical role in disaster preparedness, as well as enabling SDG&E management to plan work projects and allocate resources more effectively and efficiently.

Susan Hall, The Angel’s Depot, April 9, 2013

Susan Hall, the founder and executive director of The Angel’s Depot, presented a program regarding the non-profit that she founded in 2005 to feed impoverished seniors in our area. Nearly 1000 seniors each month receive a 12”x 12”x12” box containing enough food to make 21 meals. The contents are nutritionally balanced and are packaged by volunteers. They are distributed through senior centers. Recipients must be sixty years of age or older or 55 with a disability and have an income not exceeding $985 per month. The average income of the individuals receiving a box is $765 a month.
The organization did receive some funding from the county initially, but not now. They do receive some funding from the cities that they serve (although they have been notified that they won’t be receiving any funding from Oceanside next year), from some of the casinos in the area and from private individuals and corporations. 30% of the food is donated and the rest is purchased.

David Ringrose, San Diego Maritime Museum, April 2, 2013

Jim Czarnowski introduced our speaker today, David Ringrose, who educated us about the San Diego Maritime Museum. David is a retired UCSD professor, who now serves as one of the 700 volunteers for the museum who work over 100,000 hours per year in the museum’s behalf. The San Diego Maritime Museum has been in existence since 1948 and is best known for its tall ship, the Star of India, which is the oldest operational sailing ship in the world. But this is but one of the nine ships currently owned by the museum. Others include the Californian, a 140 foot topsail
schooner, which takes passengers out for a tall ship adventure sail, the 1904 steam yacht Medea, the 1914 Pilot, the H.M.S Surprise, which is a replica of an 18th century British frigate which was featured in a movie. Also there are two submarines, including a Russian sub and a Viet Nam era swift boat that runs a 75 minute public tour most weekends. (David didn’t say if the swift boat was piloted by John Kerry or not). A current project of the museum is building a
replica of the San Salvador, the Spanish galleon that was the first to reach the San Diego shore.
