(Ed. Note: Our scribe failed to put anything in about our program, which could be excused as a rookie mistake, except that it was his fiancée giving the program! Hopefully the fine master won’t learn of this.)

Cheryl Broom from MiraCosta Community College presented us with a program commemorating  MiraCosta’s 80 years in our community, beginning as Oceanside-Carlsbad Junior College at the site of Oceanside High School in 1934 and moving to its current location on Barnard Drive in Oceanside in 1964. Dr. John MacDonald was named President at that time, a position he held for the next 18 years.

In 1988 MiraCosta opened its San Elijo campus in Cardiff. Recent additions on the main campus have included a new student center and library, a new performing arts center and a biotechnology center and in 2013 it received a $2.75 million dollar federal grant from the US Labor Dept. to start a Technology Career Institute to train machinists and industrial technicians. Famous grads of Mira Costa include Willie Buchanon, professional football defensive back for the Green Bay Packers and the Chargers and Kevin Towers, former GM for the Padres.

Famous retired staff members include our own Lee Russell and the late Gayle Prentiss, also an El Camino Rotarian for several years. Currently there are over fourteen thousand students enrolled in credit classes at MiraCosta and another two thousand enrolled in non-credit classes and workshops.

Joe Martin Foundation for Exceptional Craftsmanship: Rob Rabourne – March 4, 2014

Rob Rabourne was our guest speaker today. He is the community outreach spokesman for the Joe Martin Foundation for Exceptional Craftsmanship. They have a facility in Vista called the Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship Museum. This facility is the home of many miniature displays. A couple of interesting facts about the items on display is that they took many years to build and they actually run or operate.

They have cars, airplanes, engines, trains, firearms, machinery and tools and much, much more for visitors to enjoy. They are open Monday, Tuesday Friday & Saturday 9 to 4. If you want to see some of the displays running and operating, be there at 10, 12 or 2pm.

They are located at 3190 Lionshead Ave, in Vista. If you get a chance, go and check them out. Also Joe Sarnecky suggested that we might get a group of those interested to go through the museum some Saturday.
